Rick Devens: Big Brother 28 Winner, Survivor Record, Wife and Age

Rick Devens won Big Brother 28. He took the $750,000 grand prize after the jury voted 6-1 in his favor, and he got there by evicting a houseguest who treated him like a father. The finale aired live on CBS on October 1, 2026, and the result also made Big Brother history. Below is who he is, how he won, what he earned, and what is known about his life outside the house.

Who Is Rick Devens?

Rick Devens, whose full name is Patrick William Devens, is an American reality TV personality and former TV news anchor. He is best known for competing on two seasons of Survivor and one season of Big Brother.

Fans first knew him by “Rick” on Survivor, but he was usually called by his last name and chose to go by Devens on Big Brother. That is why both names appear in coverage of him.

How Old Is Rick Devens, and Where Is He From?

Devens is 42. He was born on April 5, 1984. He studied at Virginia Tech. His Survivor bio lists Blacksburg, Virginia as his hometown and Macon, Georgia as his residence. He also describes himself as an Eagle Scout.

What Happened to Rick Devens on Survivor?

He placed 4th on Survivor: Edge of Extinction in 2019 and 7th on Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans in 2026. He never won the title. Gold Derby notes he reached the end of Survivor twice without claiming it.

Survivor: Edge of Extinction (Season 38)

His first run was a comeback story. He started as a premerge boot, then returned and strung together immunity wins, idol finds and memorable Tribal Council moments before going out in a literal blaze. At the merge he won the challenge that let him re-enter the game. By his own account, he holds the Survivor record for Hidden Immunity Idols played in a single season, two for himself and two for friends.

Survivor 50

His return came with a twist. He was originally cast as an alternate, not a full player. He ended up on the Cila tribe alongside Cirie Fields, Savannah Louie and Christian Hubicki. He finished 7th. His friend Aubry Bracco later won the season, and she made several podcast appearances during Big Brother 28 to advocate for him.

Did Rick Devens Win Big Brother?

Yes. He won Big Brother 28 and America’s Favorite Houseguest, and he is the first Survivor castaway to win Big Brother.

He entered as one of three “Icons,” alongside Big Brother alum Angela Murray and Survivor 45 winner Dee Valladares. He also became only the second person to win both the main title and the fan prize, after Taylor Hale.

How the Finale Played Out

  1. Final HOH, Part 1: Taylor Brown won the endurance round, holding a kite on a rolling log.
  2. Final HOH, Part 2: Devens beat Drew Campbell in the knock-down-the-cutouts round.
  3. Final HOH, Part 3: Devens beat Taylor in the jury-question round, getting five correct to her three.
  4. The cut: As final HOH, Devens voted to evict Drew and took Taylor to the final two chairs.
  5. The vote: Taylor received one jury vote, from Lala. Angela, Barrett, Yash, Melody, Dee and Drew all voted for Devens.

Why Did Rick Devens Cut Drew Campbell?

He had planned to take Drew, but Taylor changed his mind the night before the finale. Taylor told him he wouldn’t have beaten Drew in the final two. Devens told Parade that he believed his promise to Drew and that the change of heart hurt.

This is the part of the finale that fans will argue about, and the logic holds up. A final-two against Drew carried real risk because Drew had a bigger social footprint with the jury. Taylor was the safer opponent.

The cost of that choice turned out to be zero. Drew said he could never vote for Taylor and would not be a bitter juror. That is what made the move so effective: Devens kept his bigger threat out of the final two without losing his vote.

Drew’s own account supports this reading. He told Entertainment Weekly that he would have cut Devens, calling it the bigger move and a résumé builder. Drew also said Devens made the right call, though he added that he’ll “always be Judas” to him. That mix of respect and hurt made the finale emotional.

Drew’s biggest game regret was something else. He told Parade the move he regrets most is voting Mallory out.

How Much Did Rick Devens Win?

He won $810,000 across the season. That breaks down as $750,000 for the win, $50,000 for America’s Favorite Houseguest, and $10,000 earned during the game. The Hollywood Reporter puts his season total at $810,000.

Entertainment Weekly also describes him as host of Survivor’s official podcast, On Fire. His current employment status after the win has not been confirmed.

What Makes His Win Notable?

Three things stand out:

  • Cross-franchise first. No Survivor castaway had won Big Brother before him.

  • Social game over brute force. The Drew decision shows a player who knew when sentiment was an asset and when it was a liability.
